Flint Energies’ Touchstone Energy School Savings Program is an energy savings program offered to the Houston County Board of Education. This program awards schools that conserve energy during shutdown periods like Christmas holidays and spring break with the chance to win $1,000 or a faculty breakfast.
Prior to closing for school breaks, faculty members are urged to turn off heating and a/c and electric appliances, such as computers and mini-fridges. During the shutdowns, two school system employees audit the schools to assure electric items are off. Names of schools with successful shutdowns are put in a drawing; for each break, one school receives $1,000 and three schools win faculty breakfasts. The schools can use the cash how they wish, from professional development to equipment needs.
The benefit of the program is to reward energy conservation habits. As teachers shut down their electric appliances, they teach energy conservation to their students and these good habits carry over to teachers’ and students’ homes.
