Flint Energies Announces “Hot Summer Rebates - 10 Lucky Winners Will Win GE Appliance Packages
January 25, 2012
Flint Energies is looking for volunteers from its membership who would like to participate in its Hot Summer Rebate pilot program, according to Jimmy Autry, Sr. Vice President at Flint Energies. “Rebates will be offered to a select group of volunteers who reduce their energy usage during the summer months June 1 through September 30, 2012,” he said.

“In addition, residential members selected to participate in the pilot program will be eligible for a drawing where Flint Energies will be giving away GE appliance packages to the winners,” said Autry. Full rules and details are available at www.flintenergies.com
This pilot program will be used to collect data to see the impact of rebates for members who decrease their electricity usage during times of peak system demand and high hourly energy prices.
“Participation will be limited to approximately 300 residential members randomly selected and recruited by Flint Energies to participate, in addition to about 150 members in the control group,” he said. “However, every member who volunteers will likely not qualify for the pilot project.”
Selected members will receive rebate credits to their Flint accounts for energy use reduction during critical peak hours. Rebate payments will be based on the amount of load reduction as compared to a calculated baseline usage level.
On scheduled “Hot Summer” afternoons, Flint Energies will notify program members in several ways. From 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on load management days, members will have the opportunity to reduce their energy levels and earn rebates.
While Flint’s normal residential rate is 9.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, the Hot Summer Rebate will be 87 cents per kilowatt-hour of reduction as compared to the member-specific baseline usage, according to Autry. A baseline for each peak event day is calculated using each member’s load for recent historical days that are non-holiday weekdays and non-event days. The historical days used in the baseline calculation are ideally similar in temperature and humidity conditions of the event day. Rebates will be awarded as a line-item credit on the member’s monthly bill, he added.
“Selected members chosen to participate will receive new technology in their home that will allow them to hear about the day's peak hours,” said Autry.” Those who conserve energy during peak load periods can earn Hot Summer Rebates, which will reduce your cost of electric bill.”
In addition, during the term of the pilot project, selected members will have their name drawn to win brand new General Electric appliances to be installed in their home. “The bottom line is potentially lower bills and a chance to win some awesome additions for your home,” Autry said.
Members who sign up to volunteer will provide answers to questions about their home energy usage and lifestyles. All information will be held confidential by Flint Energies. Members who are selected agree to an interview before and after the test, and they agree to meet with a Flint Energies employee who may give you a simple device for you to use to monitor your home’s usage, at no cost.
Autry gave these further details:
WHAT WILL FLINT ENERGIES PROVIDE? The equipment, installation, service, usage advice and follow-up.
WHAT IS MY OBLIGATION, IF SELECTED? To meet with Flint Energies employees and allow the small equipment installation inside the home and to participate throughout the duration of the project, unless you move away.
WHAT WILL THIS COST THE MEMBER? There is no cost of any kind to the member. Members who successfully use less during peak hours may earn Rebates credited to their Flint Energies bills.
OVERVIEW The Hot Summer Rebates program helps you save money if you reduce energy use on peak-event days when electricity demand is high. This no risk program allows you to keep the same rate you have now but gives you the opportunity to get a rebate for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) reduction you make at designated times during the summer. You get a new chance each summer month to save.
PEAK-EVENT TIME PERIODS 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. up to 25 times (125 hours) Sunday through Saturday from June through September.
PEAK-EVENT DAY NOTIFICATION Members enrolled in Hot Summer Rebates may hear about peak days on their in-home device and see usage on the Internet. Selected participants will receive the in-home device and will receive an e-mail to inform them about the peak day.
MAXIMIZE YOUR REBATE To get the greatest rebate, reduce your electricity use as much as possible from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on peak days. Each month, you can check out the impact of shifting certain appliances to maximize your potential rebate.
YOUR REBATE You receive your Hot Summer Rebates as a bill credit on your monthly bills from July to October (follows June-September peak months) from Flint.
ENROLLMENT There is no cost to enroll and no risk. However, the program only helps you save money if you can reduce electricity use during peak-event periods.
