Flint Energies’ Touchstone Energy School Savings Program is an energy savings program offered to the Houston County Board of Education. This program awards schools that conserve energy with the chance to win $1,000 or a faculty breakfast.

Prior to closing for school breaks, faculty members are urged to turn off heating and a/c and electric appliances, such as computers and mini-fridges. A school system employee compares each school’s energy usage from the same time last year. The elementary, middle and high school with the most reduced energy usage for the quarter wins $1,000. The elementary, middle and high school with the second most reduced energy usage wins a faculty breakfast. The schools can use the cash how they wish, from professional development to equipment needs.

The benefit of the program is to reward energy conservation habits. As teachers shut down their electric appliances, they teach energy conservation to their students and these good habits carry over to teachers’ and students’ homes.
